Vertical Content Specialist / Designer
(Short Content Specialist / Designer)

Based in Washington, DC

 

The National Association of Letter Carriers, an AFL-CIO affiliated union representing 290,000 active and retired letter carriers, is seeking a Vertical Content Specialist/Designer. The position is based in-person in Washington, D.C., and is an exciting opportunity for a creative, digital storyteller to be a part of a growing digital team.

The ideal candidate has experience in content production, scripting, editing and on-camera/filming responsibilities, with a focus on enhancing digital messaging. The Vertical Content Specialist/Designer will work with various staff to provide and coordinate field coverage of all assigned union events. 

The Vertical Content Specialist/Designer will create high-quality, compelling, and simple content for audiences, work closely with communications and various organizational staff, and manage multiple projects under tight deadlines. The individual must have strong verbal, written, and editorial communication skills, proficiency in video and graphic editing software, and, most importantly, bring creativity to complex campaigns, issues, and concepts.

Position Requirement and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university, or equivalent experience 
  • Experience in journalism, video production, and digital content creation 
  • Proficient knowledge of video and graphics editing software
  • General commitment to the principles of organized labor 
  • Proven experience creating short-form and vertical video content for platforms such as Instagram Reels, TikTok, YouTube Shorts, and Facebook/Instagram Stories.
  • Strong storytelling skills, including the ability to translate complex issues, campaigns, and concepts into simple, compelling visual narratives.
  • Proficiency with video editing software (e.g., Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, or similar) and graphics/editing tools (e.g., After Effects, Photoshop, Illustrator, Canva or similar).
  • Experience with on-camera work and/or filming, including framing, lighting, audio, and basic production techniques for mobile and professional cameras.
  • Ability to script, storyboard, and plan short-form content that aligns with organizational goals and campaign messages.
  • Strong editorial judgment and attention to detail, including the ability to fact-check, proofread, and ensure brand and message consistency.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and competing deadlines in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
  • Familiarity with social media best practices, trends, and analytics for short-form and vertical content, with an eye toward maximizing reach and engagement.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work closely with staff, members, and leaders in the field, including event coverage and rapid-response content.
  • Flexibility to adapt quickly to changing priorities, including rapid response, evening/weekend assignments, and travel for on-site coverage.
  • Experience with, but not limited to, the following tools: 
    • Video Production & Editing
      • Video editing software (one or more of):
      • Adobe Premiere Pro
      • Final Cut Pro
      • DaVinci Resolve
      • CapCut, Adobe Premiere Rush, or similar mobile-friendly editor
      • Motion graphics / text tools:
      • Adobe After Effects, or integrated text and motion tools in Premiere/CapCut
    • Captioning and subtitling tools:
      • Auto-captioning inside Premiere/CapCut, or dedicated tools like VEED.io, Descript, or similar
    • Design & Branding
      • Graphic design tools for titles, covers, and social assets:
      • Canva or Adobe Express
      • Adobe Photoshop and/or Illustrator for more advanced graphic work
      • Thumbnail creation (YouTube, Reels covers, etc.) in Canva, Photoshop, or similar
      • Filming & Production Support
      • Mobile filming apps (native camera, FiLMiC Pro, or similar)
      • Basic familiarity with:
        • DSLR/mirrorless camera interfaces
        • Audio recording tools (lav mics, recorders)
        • Lighting basics (ring lights, LED panels)
    • Social Platform Tools
      • In app editors and tools for:
        • Instagram Reels
        • TikTok
        • YouTube Shorts
        • Facebook/Instagram Stories
        • Social scheduling/publishing tools that support vertical formats (Later, Hootsuite, Sprout Social, or similar)
    • Organization & Workflow
      • File management in cloud storage (Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox, etc.)
      • Project management tools (Asana, Trello, Monday.com, or similar)
      • Collaboration tools (Teams, Slack, or similar) for coordinating with comms and field staff
